Basic Information about Medicaid Health Plan Options and Benefits in Missouri
Preparing to Connect with a Health Plan
- Which health plan to call? Parents/guardians should have a health insurance card that displays the name of the health plan. If this information is not easily available (but the student is Medicaid-enrolled or eligible), then contact one plan and they can re-direct you, if necessary. Each plan has agreed to assist school nurses in this way.
- If you know the student's social security number, you can access the quick and easy interactive voice response system at MO Health Net Provider Communications 573-751-2896.
- The MO Health Net Enrollment Center can also assist with determining health plan information. Call 800-348-6627.
- Note: Some schools have access to the online EMO-MED system and can look-up the health plan name for Medicaid-enrolled students.
- Parent permission. It is recommended that you obtain parent permission to contact the health plan so you can freely share information. Click here for more info about recommended FERPA-compliant practices for documenting parent permission.
- Name and birth date. You will need the student’s full name and birth date when you contact the health plan. That’s it. You do not need the insurance card ID number.
Basic Information about Medicaid Health Plan Options and Benefits in Missouri
- There are 4 managed care health plan options as part of the MO HealthNet program (aka, Medicaid). Each health plan provides services in every Missouri county. The health plans are required to offer the same services and benefits.
- Show Me Health Kids managed by Home State Health is a special managed Medicaid health plan for youth who are in DSS custody, former foster children, and for individuals receiving adoption and guardianship subsidy.
- You can view which primary care providers (doctors) work with each plan through the health plan's provider search, which is available here.
Let's encourage school health professionals across Missouri to request assistance from health plan nurses and care managers. We must also share our feedback and needs with them so this new partnership between school nurses and health plans can advance our mutual cause -- child well-being.
